Hi All,

We all have files on our Macs that we don’t really want others looking at, be it pay slips, passport & birth cert scans or some important legal documents and sometimes it can feel like a pain to keep them away from others. Traditionally your solutions involved burying them inside folder after folders hoping no one goes looking, or having to set up separate multiple accounts on your Mac.

One very good and handy solution to this is to create an encrypted, password protected .DMG file. This mountable disk image is the perfect place to store anything you don’t want others to see, Think of it as a password protected folder.

It’s not too hard to set up at all, just follow the steps below and you shouldn’t have any problems.

  • Open Disk Utility
  • Click on the “New Image” icon
  • Use the “Save As” field to give it a name
  • Select what size you wish to use (if its just for some documents 1GB should be loads)
  • Select either 128 or 256 bit AES-encryption
  • In “Image Format” select “sparse disk image”
  • Press “Create” and enter the password you wish to use (DO NOT save the password to the keychain)

Simply click on the spare image file and enter your password and you now have your folder ready to store your top-secret world domination plans.

When you’re done simply unmount the folder by ejecting it.

Until next week,

Dave
